Southwestern Baseball, Ties Best Start In Program History
Southwestern College baseball (6-0) wasted little time asserting itself Friday night and erupted for 17 runs in Woodland Hills against Los Angeles Pierce College, as the batting order wrecked the opposing pitching staff. The hot start has the Jags tied for the best start in program history and its longest winning streak to begin a season since the 2009 Super Regional team. The Jaguars look like a balanced team that will be able to compete with the best in Southern California
Southwestern is one of the last four remaining undefeated California Community College teams, joining Irvine Valley (8-0), Ohlone (8-0), Fresno City (8-0). The team is as focused as any, and longtime followers are buzzing about "one of the most talented" teams in a while. Despite the early success, the team is still working to play an all-around complete game. Pitched impressively, didn't hit consistently well. Hit well, didn't pitch dominantly. Pitched and hit well but didn't play effective defensively. Getting all phases of the game to click (pitching, hitting, baserunning, and fielding/defense) over nine innings day in and day out is no simple task. But as a team, it is about being great at what you are good at.
Southwestern faces a key test when they return home on Tuesday (Feb. 10) for a midweek game against El Camino (7-1). This big-boy baseball matchup should be one of the best of the week and represents a great opportunity for the Jaguars. The Jags have a chance to continue building early-season momentum and pick up a pivotal win for its eventual 3C2A So Cal Regional resume. Equally important, it is another chance to see how the 2026 Jags go about their business, respond to a challenge, and win a big game. So far, so good.
