Southwestern Jaguars Advance to Second Round
RIVERSIDE, Ca. - The No. 24 seed Southwestern Jaguars battled past and 'upset' the No. 8 seed Riverside Tigers, 79-74, in the first round of the 3C2A Southern California Regionals on Wednesday night. Southwestern started slow before outscoring Riverside by 11 points in the second half to grind out a tough team win on the road.
Derek Edmond led the way with a 33 point, 8 rebound performance while Christian Gamboa added 19 points, and Tres Luzey chipped in 15 points. Southwestern shot an efficient 56.9% from the floor and dominated the paint, outscoring Riverside 48–18 inside.
For any given team the playoffs can be the final game of the season, so the intensity goes up another notch as the Jags prepare for a second round matchup vs. West Los Angeles in Culver City, Ca. Southwestern has shown it is a different team (for the better) than the November/December version, but West LA has only lost one game in the last month. This one will have athleticism all over the court. Nothing will come easy. Can the 'last team in' the tournament pull off another underdog upset? We don't have to wait long to find out.
